This past week was evidence that when we put our
hands, minds, and initiatives together, we can accomplish what many think is impossible! The weekend of 19-21 September was
proof that the GHS Class of 1978 has not lost its strength...
Our Reunion Weekend started out with a tour of our school. Walking the halls of
GHS really brought back so many memories. Most of the classmates agreed that the halls and class rooms seemed so small. Is
it because most of us are "larger" in size today? Is it because GHS was probably the largest school we all
had attended during those years? Or is it just our minds playing tricks on us? Nevertheless as our minds took the trip
back down memory lane, we could visualize and hear the faces and voices of yesteryears. This was definitely a great opportunity
to share with friends and family.
After the tour of
GHS, we gathered in the parking lot for a pre-game tailgating event. Many of our classmates along with their family members
got together for great food and conversations. What more could you ask for? The best was yet to come.......
Our Gretna Hawks football team gave us a great home welcoming by absolutely dominating
Magna Vista 41-0. We were so proud of our team and we wish them continued success! Half time activities consisted
of the music rendered by the GHS Marching Band. In addition to the music, GHS retired the Football Jersey of
Vic Hall. We were honored to have Vic present for the ceremony. In addition to Vic's ceremony,
the GHS 2008 Women's Softball Team were presented their State Championship rings and trophies. It was definitely "a
night of champions". The halftime ceremonies ended with our Class President, JoAnn Shelton Coles presenting
GHS with a check in the amount of $2250 in memory of our deceased classmates for the Gretna Senior High School Scholarship
Fund.
Saturday we gathered at the Altavista Country Club for
great food, dancing, conversations, and a lot of reminiscing. Many of our fellow classmates and their
families were present for this grand event. We took a step back in time and had the popular DJ, Madd Ladd providing the music.
He played many of the hits of 1978 that made us laugh, cry, and etc..... Our food was catered by "Silver
Pig”. Much thanks to Madd Ladd and the staff of Silver Pig for their support and services!!!!
A portion of our reunion was dedicated to the memories of our deceased classmates. Committee
members set up a memorial table with pictures of our classmates with flowers and candles. Please
take a moment to view the page we have dedicated to our deceased classmates.
Sunday morning, several of our classmates attended worship services at First Baptist
Church, in Gretna. We were honored that two of our fellow classmates, Rev. MacArthur "Mac" Meyers and
Shelia Hodnett Booth took part in the services. Sheila sang a song that she has written and recorded, "God is the Same".
The committee members would like to thank everyone who
helped make our 30th Class Reunion a success. We look forward to our 35th.
